The Grey Man

Since over the years, I’ve vacationed on and off at Edisto Island. I have along with many others, fallen in love with this Island and wanted to paint a series of paintings about it, however, coming from the background I’m in, I decided to paint a different kind of Edisto. I wanted to explore it’s mystery and uniqueness, and it’s past, specifically some of the ghost stories surrounding the island. This is the first in this series, Edisto Island and it’s Secrets, this one is called “The Grey Man.” The story is best told in Nancy Rhyne’s book More Tales of

the South Carolina Low Country. The Grey Man legend is of a young man who appears on the South Carolina Coast and those that see him should realize it is a warning of a hurricane approaching. Last time my husband and I were at Edisto we thought of the Grey Man because hurricane Charlie was approaching. We never saw him, but I decided it was time to paint him.
