Mask of the Red DeathThis was an illustration for the story by Edgar Allen Poe, this particular version was published in 1995. I had a lucky year of creating illustrations for Poes works, as well as illustrating Frankenstein, Little Women and the Scarlet Letter. The symbolism was so rampant in this work that I had a hard time choosing what I wanted to paint, so I settled on the ebony clock and a hallway to indicate the various colored rooms that Prince Prospero entertained his guests in before the striking of midnight. The central figure is obvious enough to the viewer, but if you haven't read the story or any of Poe's other works, do! |
