Rite of Passage
This was my very first assignment for Easton Press Books. The story by Alexei Panshin is one of the great masterpieces in Science Fiction.
The protagonist, a teenager named Mia liked to take shortcuts through the spaceship duct works, so it made sense to me to portray her there. However, I also wanted to show something more and in the course of painting the duct I realized the duct itself could almost dissolve into space, stars and planets. Sense Mia was at the age where all teens of a certain age would be dropped on a planet without provisions, and do a walk-about, I felt the symbolism was apparent. It was a simple idea but it worked.
