The Scarlet LetterThis was probably my most favorite of the classics to illustrate because I got to explore both the emotion and the symbolism that is present in this maverick work by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Here the main character, Hester is forced to live outside the confines of the village after it is discovered that she has given birth to a child long after her husband has passed away. She refuses to name the real father and is banished. I felt the broken fence with the roses overgrown around it symbolized the strength of nature and the passion this woman has in herself and her life. I completed 10 paintings for this story - most of which are small depicting various scenes in the book, the two largest are this one and Dimmesdales Terrors. Original available at Figaro Gallery Large painting, double matted. Please inquire about this piece through Figaro Gallery. |
