The Unholy
Most of my ideas come from night dreams, this one came to me in the day while I was quietly meditating. I immediately sketched out a very rough idea (someday I'll post these scratchy first drafts so that you all can see how the beginnings of most paintings are done on any loose piece of paper I find around the house). That's the easy part - the genesis, the hard part is then finding the model you need or the right sky or building. My model became my husband - Dean, though Dean doesn't really look like this guy, I removed my husbands thick head of hair and had him turn on his acting skills to produce this very scary character. We also rented the vestment from a costume shop.
I began research on churches to find the perfect one to fit the piece, however, it came down to picking a church I pass by everyday. With some distortion, color and lighting changes, the building took on a more disturbing countenance. I actually forced the perspective in photoshop before transferring the building to my board. The sky was fairly easy to paint but I wanted it to have movement and drama. The most important part for me was to show the priest in mid-stride and almost as an afterthought he has turned to look at the viewer - you, as if you have opened up a window and seen his world and he is seeing you as well.
